Rooted in the Rainforest
Monsuniq was founded on the belief that meaningful encounters with nature don't require sacrificing comfort or safety
Back to HomeOur Story
Monsuniq began in 2018 when a group of Sabah-based naturalists and hospitality professionals recognized a gap in how visitors were experiencing Borneo's rainforests. Tour operators offered either basic camping with minimal amenities or lodge-based experiences that kept guests at arm's length from the forest itself. We saw an opportunity to create something different.
Our first glamping site was established in the Crocker Range foothills, a 90-minute drive from Kota Kinabalu. We spent months testing tent designs, sourcing sustainable materials, and training guides who could navigate both the ecological and cultural dimensions of the rainforest. The goal was simple: allow guests to sleep within the forest soundscape while maintaining the comfort and hygiene standards they'd expect from a quality hotel.
Over the past several years, we've expanded to include sites near the Kinabatangan River and within the Danum Valley Conservation Area. Each location was chosen for its ecological significance and accessibility. We work closely with local communities, employing Dusun and Murut guides who grew up in these forests and understand their rhythms in ways that formal training alone cannot provide.
Today, Monsuniq operates as a small team of 12 full-time staff members, supplemented by seasonal naturalists and community guides. We remain intentionally small, preferring depth of experience over volume. Our mission is to facilitate genuine encounters with Borneo's rainforests while maintaining the ecological integrity of the sites we operate within.

Quality Standards
Sustainable Tourism Practices
All sites operate under low-impact protocols. We use solar power, composting toilets where appropriate, and source food locally. Waste is carried out and properly disposed of in Kota Kinabalu.
Safety Protocols
All guides carry first aid certification and satellite communication devices. Medical evacuation procedures are in place for each site, and we maintain insurance coverage for all guests and staff.
Community Partnership
We employ guides from Dusun and Murut communities whose ancestral lands border our sites. Revenue-sharing agreements ensure that local communities benefit directly from conservation tourism.
Tourism Licensing
Monsuniq holds a valid tour operator license from Sabah Tourism Board and operates under permits issued by the Sabah Forestry Department for activities within conservation areas.
Food Safety Standards
All meals are prepared following Malaysian food safety guidelines. Ingredients are sourced from vetted suppliers, and kitchen staff maintain hygiene certifications. Dietary restrictions are accommodated.
Privacy & Data Protection
Guest information is stored securely and used only for booking coordination and safety purposes. We do not share personal data with third parties and comply with Malaysian data protection regulations.
Our Approach to Rainforest Tourism
Borneo's rainforests represent some of the oldest continuous forest cover on Earth, with ecosystems that predate the Amazon by millions of years. We approach these landscapes with respect for their ecological complexity and cultural significance to indigenous communities who have stewarded them for generations.
Our glamping model prioritizes education alongside comfort. Guests don't simply visit the rainforest; they learn to read its signals. Naturalists explain the relationships between fig trees and hornbills, the role of leaf-cutter ants in nutrient cycling, and how nocturnal mammals navigate using echolocation. This context transforms a jungle walk from scenic backdrop into a lesson in interconnected systems.
We maintain small group sizes, typically no more than eight guests per guide, to minimize ecological disturbance and allow for genuine interaction with guides. Trails are rotated seasonally to prevent overuse, and we avoid nesting sites or sensitive habitats during breeding seasons. Photography guidelines ensure that flash use doesn't stress nocturnal wildlife.
Revenue generated from glamping experiences supports ongoing forest monitoring programs conducted in partnership with Sabah Wildlife Department. Camera trap data collected at our sites contributes to regional wildlife population assessments. Guests who choose our longer programs often participate in these monitoring activities, gaining firsthand insight into conservation fieldwork.
